Breast Reduction
[Reduction Mammaplasty]
Also known as reduction mammaplasty, breast reduction surgery removes excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin to achieve a breast size in proportion with your body and to alleviate the discomfort associated with overly large breast
Overly large
breasts can cause some women to have both health and emotional problems. In
addition to self-image issues, you may also experience physical pain and
discomfort.
The weight
of excess breast tissue can impair your ability to lead an active life. The
emotional discomfort and self-consciousness often associated with having large
pendulous breasts is as important an issue to many women as the physical
discomfort and pain.
Patients who
undergo breast reduction surgery are usually seeking relief from physical
symptoms caused by the excessive weight of large breasts. Breast reduction
surgery can solve many of these problems as well as make your breasts smaller
and firmer. After the surgery, your breasts will be more proportional to the
rest of your body.
You may be a
candidate for this surgery if you have one or more of the following conditions:
-Breasts that are too large in proportion to your body frame
-Back, neck or shoulder pain caused by the weight of your breasts
-Skin irritations beneath your breasts
-Indentations in your shoulders caused by tight bra straps
-Heavy pendulous breasts with nipples and areolas that point downward
Breast
reduction surgery requires three incisions. One incision is made around the
areola, another runs vertically from the areola to the bottom crease of the
breast, and the third incision follows the natural curve of the breast crease.
After the incisions are made and the excessive skin and breast tissue is
removed, the nipple and the areola are shifted to a higher position. The areola
is reduced in size and the skin is then placed together to reshape the
breast.
Liposuction
may be used at the same time to improve the contour of the shape under the arm.
Unless you gain or lose a significant amount of weight or become pregnant, you
breast size should remain fairly constant. After breast reduction surgery,
it is often possible to return to work within a couple of weeks, depending on
your job.
Insurance coverage is sometimes available for breast reduction surgery. Many factors determine your eligibility, including specific terms of your insurance policy and the amount of breast tissue to be removed. In many cases, a letter of predetermination may be required by your insurance company before surgery. Our have a great deal of experience in working with many major insurance carriers to get breast reductions authorized.
