Oral Surgery
Oral surgery is a speciality of dentistry that surgically treats dentoalveolar diseases, or the diseases of the mouth and gums. Oral surgery is generally performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Procedures that require oral surgery include extraction of wisdom teeth, molars, cracked or impacted teeth; removal and repair of infected teeth, treatment of periodontal disease; placement of dental implants; surgical correction of fractures, cosmetic repairs of congenital and facial deformities and damage due to diseases that affect the bones of the mouth and jaw. Sometimes, oral surgery is also required to treat some forms of oral cancer, especially of the lips and tongue. Oral surgery is also required for the treatment of serious conditions like sleep apnea. The benefits of any form of oral surgery far outweigh its risks as most pain or discomfort is relieved with tooth extraction or fixing jaws.
