Inverted Nipples
An inverted nipple is one that is retracted into the breast instead of pointing outwards. This is a fairly common problem amongst women and is not medically harmful. Inverted nipples can be classified as 'shy nipples' and 'true inverted nipples'. Shy nipples temporarily protrude outwards when stimulated, massaged or when exposed to cold temperatures. A true inverted nipple on the other hand, is usually caused due to connections in underlying tissue and ligaments which are shorter and pull the nipple in towards the breast tissue, and hence doesn't protrude. Generally, inverted nipples are present from birth, but sometimes later in life, the skin of the breast can become looser around the nipples making them appear inverted. Breastfeeding is not necessarily a problem as infant's suckling action brings out nipples in most cases. Several different procedures can be used to correct inverted nipples, and most are geared towards keeping sensation and ability to breastfeed intact.
