Hypertrophic Acne
Hypertrophic acne scars appear raised, and feel like a firm, hard mass of tissue. These types of acne scars are also commonly referred to as keloid scars. Hypertrophic acne scars often grow larger than the original acne blemish, forming a large tough lump on the affected skin tissue. These type of hypertrophic scars are most common on the torso, and are more often found in men as opposed to women. They develop due to an overproduction of collagen, which results in the raised mass of flesh common in hypertrophic scarring. Hypertropic scars are often harder to treat than other types of acne scars, and they often reur after scar removal. Steroid treatment, either injected or topical, is commonly used. Cryosurgery and some forms of laser treatment may also reduce the appearance of hypertrophic scars.
