Areola Reduction
Areola is the central, circular and pigmented area of the breast that shows different anatomic variations in men and women. Usually women have enlarged areolas that are caused due to genetic predisposition, age, stretching of tissue by heavy breasts or breastfeeding. Such enlarged areolas are a source of dissatisfaction and diminished self-worth in many women. Areola reduction aims to remove the redundant areola tissue and enhance cosmetic appeal of breasts. This procedure is sometimes also performed in conjunction with breast reduction surgeries to ensure areolas are proportionate to the new size of the breast. The surgery is designed to reduce the diameter of the areola by making pencil thin incisions on the outer circumference of the areola and removing excess tissue. This is a simple procedure that takes under two hours and presents pleasing results with balanced proportion of areolas and breasts.
