Areola Reduction Surgery
The 'nipple' is actually made up of two parts- the projected part called the nipple and the central, pigmented part called the areola. Enlarged areola is a common complaint in women with large and heavy breasts, or those who have undergone structural changes due to breast feeding. Proportionate areolas contribute to appealing breasts and areola reduction surgery is offered to women who desire reduced areolas for purely cosmetic reasons. The surgery is done by removing a small 'doughnut' shaped portion of the areola by making an incision around its periphery. Enlarged areolas require a lollipop shaped closure that involves a vertical incision running down from the nipple and around the areola, which is then sutured in the shape of a lollipop. Dissolvable sutures are placed underneath the skin, which help to minimise scarring. Some surgeons however use permanent suture technique in which non-resorbable suture material made from polypropylene or nylon is used. The procedure takes 1-2 hours and is performed under light sleep sedation or general anaesthesia.
