Advanced Dermatology
Advanced dermatology is a sub-specialty of dermatology, the medical field dealing with the medical and surgical aspects of skin and its diseases and disorders. After a four year bachelors degree and another four years of medical school, advanced dermatologists must complete a year long internship followed by a three year dermatological residency and then a one to two year fellowship in a sub-specialization such as cosmetic dermatology, immunodermatology, phototherapy, laser medicine, pediatric dermatology, Teledermatology, Mohs micrographic surgery, cosmetic surgery or dermatopathology. During the last decade, advanced dermatology has been one of the quickest growing medical professions and as a result, placement in a sub-specialty dermatological residency have been the most competitive in the nation in terms of admission. The best schools in the United States include: Harvard, UCSF, NYU and The Mayo Clinic. The first great school of dermatology began in 1801 at Hôpital Saint-Louis in Paris, France. Advanced dermatology is deeply rooted in the history of medicine and can be linked back as far as 1025 in Avicenna's "The Canon of Medicine."
